Subject: SDOP Youth Sunday: Opportunity to interact with the community

Attachment:  Youth Sunday Flyer

Dear Youth Service Provider of some form or fashion:

On Sunday, March 9th, at 3:00 p.m. at St. Jude Shrine of the West (1129 S. 38th St. Corner with Boston), the San Diego Organizing Project (SDOP) will be hosting 600 – 1000 people from surrounding communities but also from area cities for YOUTH SUNDAY to launch our 2008: Year of Our Youth campaign. We are working to raise our youth as a key value for our city and county governments and to increase collaboration along with school districts, service providers, and area churches.

With such a large group of families (along with area clergy and elected officials) attending an event focused on our youth, we feel that it would be a good opportunity for groups that provide services or programs for youth to advertise their services, find possible clients, or identify possible volunteers.

Also, we are working to get some of our churches to establish relationships with service and program organizations to hold functions throughout the coming year.

The basic criteria for organizations to attend the event are the following:

·         You provide some kind of service or program for youth or families such as afterschool programs, recreation programs, gang intervention programs, diversion efforts, job training or internships, academic or educational services, mentoring relationships, intervention programs for high-risk youth, etc.

·         You are an established non-profit, governmental agency, or private company with a solid track record working with youth and families.

·         You might need volunteers and you provide adequate training for new recruits.

·         We will provide a table, but you must have your own banners and other materials to inform the public of who you are.

·         If you have various sites across the region, please communicate with other offices to not duplicate efforts. On the other hand, please be clear at the event that you have offices in a variety of locations as we will have families from across the region.

Families will begin to show up at 2:00 p.m. and we will be providing snacks and drinks in the church hall for them so ideally, tables would be set up by then. At 2:45, we will close the hall for the main event in the church which runs from 3:00 to 4:30 and then direct families back to the hall to have further time to visit the booths so the total time commitment might be from 1:45 to 5:15 or so.

If you are interested in having a “booth”, please contact Andy Sobel first at andy@sdop.net or at (619) 285-0797 ext. 206. Also, this invitation has gone out to a limited list. If you know of organizations that fit the criteria and should be present, please pass this invitation on to them and have them contact me.

Thank you for your important work and we hope to see you on the 9th.
