"Nonprofit?"

What does Nonprofit mean anyway?

“Nonprofit” organizations refer to organizations that are granted a tax-exempt status by the Internal Revenue Service. There are 23 different tax-exempt categories but the largest category is what we refer to as “501(c)(3)” or “charitable” or “public benefit” organizations. Other categories of nonprofits include mutual benefi t organizations such as homeowner and trade associations, and labor unions. There are different tax rules for the different categories. For 501(c)(3) organizations, tax exempt means that for the most part these organizations do not pay income tax and donations made to them are tax deductible by the donor.
