League of Women Voters Presentation

If you missed SANDAN's October Member meeting you missed out on a great presentation from the League of Women Voters' representative Mariette Kobrak. We had a very informative discussion on the State Ballot Propositions and Initiatives and the local City & County Propositions. If you want more information on the November 7th ballot, the League of Women Voters of California Smart Voter Guide is a great resource.

Additional Resources -

Visit the California Budget Project website for their take on how the ballot propositions will affect CA and CA nonprofits.

AB 839 was signed by the Governor on September 29, 2006. It would permit a nonprofit organization to conduct fundraisers using controlled games as a funding mechanism to further the purposes and mission of the organization with restrictions. The bill, co-sponsored by  Assembly Member Alberto Torrico and CA Attorney General Lockyer, would amend the Business and Professions Code, relating to gambling.

Background info: Fundraising Alert: No Charity Poker Games - "While eligible tax-exempt organizations registered with the CA Attorney General’s Registry of Charitable Trusts may conduct fundraising raffles, charities and anyone other than a licensed gaming establishment are not allowed to offer poker tournaments, “Monte Carlo” or “Casino Night” events, or casino games..."
