110th Congress, Ethics & Lobbying Issues

House Imposes New Rules

If you hadn't heard by now, as the 1st order of business the House approved new ethics rules aimed at ending the "culture of corruption." The changes addressed relations between lobbyists and members of the House, meant to curb abuses similar to those exposed between Jack Abramoff and a number of members of the House this past year.

S.1 Tackles Grassroots Lobbying

S.1, Legislative Transparency and Accountability Act of 2007, a bill to provide for greater transparency in the legislative process was approved by a vote of 96 - 2 on January 18, 2007 without Sec.220, the grassroots lobbying disclosure requirements. After Senator Bennett's amendment was approved, 55-43, the section was removed.
