Mental Health Systems, Inc.
Families Forward is a wraparound program that offers
intensive in-home services throughout San Diego County to
children and youth ages 6-18 who suffer from severe
emotional disabilities and are at risk for out-of-home
placement or who are transitioning back to a home-like
setting. Services include case management, mental health
services, crisis management, medication management,
educational support, flexible funding, and collaboration
with other service providers. Families Forward also
provides peer mentoring from our Family and Youth Support
Partners.
Wraparound embodies the following
principles: strength based, needs driven, individualized,
family voice and choice, team based, collaboration, and
individualized. Wraparound staff partner with the family
in utilizing a unique process to find solutions to their
problems so that they can live a happier, more stable life
and achieve goals that are important to them. Part of that
process includes helping the family build a larger team
made up of informal supports, such as extended family
members, friends, community members, and any other persons
who can provide support and be a part of the family’s life
after wraparound leaves the home. Our Information and
Referral Line offers resources to the entire community
including families, providers, and community members. For
more information on this program, contact Karyn M.
Bingham, Program Manager; (619) 297-8111 or by email at
famfor-pm@mhsinc.org.

The
AFP Code of Ethical Principles and Standards of Professional
Practice, amended in 2004, guides AFP members to act
with the highest standards and visions of their institution,
profession and conscience when generating philanthropic support. "The Association of Fundraising Professionals exists to
foster the development and growth of fund-raising professionals
and the profession, to preserve and enhance philanthropy and
volunteerism, and to promote high ethical standards in the
fund-raising profession."
Pyrrhic Fundraising, Nonprofits pay dearly for their
donations - By Rosaline Juan, Summer 2007 issue,
Stanford Social Innovation Review. "It takes money to
make money, the saying goes. But nonprofits actually lose
money – at least in the short term – when they try to
raise funds through direct marketing, find the coauthors
of a recent paper in the Journal of Nonprofit & Public
Sector Marketing (vol. 16, no. 1/2). The researchers show
that over a one-year period..."
Organizational Slack (or Goldilocks and the Three Budgets)
by Woods Bowman, for the Nonprofit Quarterly.
"Organizational slack is an important concept in the
management literature, but you won’t find it mentioned in
articles on nonprofits. It has several definitions, but
all boil down to extra resources or resources held in
reserve. The difference between a hand-to-mouth
organization and a vibrant one is slack. Think of slack as
the financial aspect of organizational capacity."
Online Fundraising Tactics, What Works? Various
fundraising strategies compared, by Karen Matheson
and Eve Fox, for TechSoup, May 2, 2007. "When it comes to
online fundraising, there is no “one size fits all” magic
formula to inspire list members to give. However, some
tactics do work better than others."
Nonprofits as Contractors for Local Governments,
Challenges and Benefits - Nonprofit Sector
Research Fund 'Snapshots', Aspen Institute, March 2007.
"When nonprofits contract with local governments, the
nonprofits may experience challenges, but they may also
gain prestige and funding for programs. Since nonprofits
may find that they are distracted from their mission by
management challenges and the demands of regulation and
oversight, they should carefully weigh both the benefits
and the costs of being government contractors."
